Welcome to the new page dedicated to Rich Islands for Adobe Flash PlatformThis is where we'll keep all of the latest content until we move to our more permanent home on SDN. Note: A recent compatibility issue was discovered pertaining to the Flash Islands technology and the Flex SDK 3.4. There was a change in the SDK in version 3.4 that makes the current Flash Island libraries supplied by SAP unusable. The issue is being researched by SAP and Adobe. Until a solution can be determined, SAP recommends the use of the Flash Islands technology only with SDK releases less than 3.4. What are SAP Rich Islands for Adobe Flash?

That Flex Component will be delivered by SAP in the near future, so I won't be giving out the source code of it. That tutorial will only involve how to use the Hierarchy component - so only Web Dynpro ABAP source code on that one.

As soon as tutorials are available for WDJ we will post those as well. Keep in mind that NetWeaver CE 7.1 EnhP1 had a little later start of Ramp-Up compaired to NetWeaver 7.0 EnhP1 - so the learning materials might also come on a later schedule.
That said a Flex Component designed as an Island will work in both WDJ and WDA. You should be able to reuse any of these tutorials in WDJ.

Or at runtime from the Flex runtime? Or is this a Web Dynpro error message? Do you have the 3.0 version of the SWC? Are you building the flex project with Flex 2.0 or 3.0?

When we release this tutorial will only be a demo of the funtionality. We will not be releasing the source code of the Flex project itself. SAP has decided not to ship this particular component. Instead you should use the JNet Network UI element.
>2) will you be explaining about the rendering engines also?
I'm not sure I understand the questions. Please elaborate. Is this question related to Islands? We have separate rendering engines in Web Dynpro - HTML and SmartClient XBCML - but these are independent of the functionality of Islands.

I'm currently researching the Rich Islands for Flash for my bachelor thesis, but it looks like there's been no progress for a pretty long time now. Can we expect to see updated libraries for Flex 3.5 or even Flex 4 in the 'near' future?
Regards,
Markus

There has been no anouncement of Flex 4 support. If you update to Flash Builder 4 you can still install and build to older Flex versions.
By no progresss, what did you mean? Just on the above mentioned issues? We continue to enhance the FlashIsland framework in general. In 7.02 we extended capabilities by offering themeing integration and drag and drop between Islands and the surrounding Web Dynpro areas of the screen.

I'm working on a NW 7.11 SP05 (I'm really struggling with the versions atm, but that's what Status tells me) and it works flawless with Flex 3.3. If I understand the release dates correctly, EhP2 will be available on 12 July, 2010 for common customers?
Well with no progress I ment it's quite hard to find (recent) information about the Islands, how they work (ie. how the data and events are converted between WD and Flex), what exact NW version you need for Flex 3.3 support, what's coming next (with EhP2). It's all somewhere on the net, partially even on some blogs, but I never found a single point where "everything you need to make it run" is concentrated (or linked).
The note about Flex 3.4+ -support is nearly a year old and I think that's quite long already. Well I guess I'm just spoiled by the development cycles in the Java environment (pure Java, not SAP related). I already figured out I got to accustom to the slower processes in such a huge environment as SAP/NW.
One last question tho: I somewhere read about the idea of delta handling for context data sent from WD to Flex to lower data traffic. By now I just fire an event from Flex to invalidate the context and check for changes in the data received on the flex side. Delta handling would of couse be a far cleaner solution, are there any plans to introduce something like that?
Thanks,
Markus

I would suggest you look at some of the materials from TechEd last year - UP201 or CD260. TechEd is generally when we roll out new technical information. For instance this year in the 2 hour WDA Update lecture, we will talk about new FlashIsland features like themeing and drag and drop between the Island and the surrounding Web Dynpro area.
>Delta handling would of couse be a far cleaner solution, are there any plans to introduce something like that?
I agree that delta handling would be nice. I built a prototype of gross delta handling of the entire xBCML stream for Web Dynpro ABAP and turned it over to development. I don't know yet if they will implement it for NetWeaver 7.03. Either way at the soonest it would be next year's release before we would see this feature likely.
